What does it do? In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
This formula is a variation on the combination of Tao Hong Si Wu Tang and Si Ni San and is used for a wide variety of complaints in the upper part of the body characterized by a fixed sharp pain in the chest and hypochondria, where there is blood stasis in the chest with impairment of blood flow in the area above the diaphragm. Such conditions are complicated by constrained liver Qi. Blood stasis obstructs the movement of Qi in the chest: this manifests as pain in the chest and hypochondria. Blockage of the flow of blood in the channels from localized blood stasis produces a characteristically fixed and piercing type of headache pain. If blood stasis obstructs the stomach, the stomach Qi may rebel upward and manifest as incessant hiccups, a choking sensation when drinking, or dry heaves. In this formula, Tao Hong Si Wu Tang invigorates the blood without consuming it and dispels blood stasis while encouraging the production of new blood. Si Ni San circulates Qi, nourishes blood, and helps smooth the flow of liver Qi. Platycodon(Jie Geng) and Citrus(Zhi Ke) expand the chest and promote the movement of Qi. Cyathula(Niu Xi) improves the circulation by eliminating blood stasis and inducing the downward movement of blood. By relieving Qi stagnation in the chest, these herbs promote the movement of Qi and thereby facilitate the movement of blood. Once heat is eliminated and blood stasis is removed, liver stagnation is also alleviated. In this way, all symptoms are automatically disappear.
In recent years, the special characteristics of this formula, such as its ability to promote blood circulation, eliminate stasis without harming the blood and eliminate obstructions without depleting Qi have allow it to be administered effective of angina associated with coronary arteriosclerosis, rheumatic valvular heart disease, corpulmonale, intercostal neuralgia, costochondritis, headache, dizziness, and mental depression related to post concussion syndromes. In clinical applications, make certain the above symptoms occur with blood stasis. Otherwise, the use of this formula is inappropriate. (Yi Lin Gai Cuo)
